RIP Sean Taylor

Three years ago today, Sean Taylor, All Pro Free Safety of the Washington Redskins, passed away from the result of a gunshot wound which occurred during a home invasion. The shot severed Taylor’s femoral artery, and he was unable to recover.

Three years later, Redskins fans, and fans of professional football in general, remember the fierce, competitive, aggressive nature with which “Meast” played the game. His mistakes were definitely noted, both on and off the field… but Sean Taylor probably knew better than anyone what the image being portrayed was. He began a silence with the media, ignoring them, wanting nothing to do with the badgering press and the snakes who work to find a soundbite which could criminalize him… but Sean became more vocal with fans, and played louder and louder every down.

While fans may overrate Taylor a bit (considering he only played 3½ seasons in the NFL), their passion and love for him comes from more than just connecting with a player on their favorite team. Taylor may have missed some tackles or blown some coverage from time to time, but no fan who watched him play the game ever saw him take a down off, or ease up, or hold back. Sean Taylor played every down violently, with complete disregard for the safety of himself and his opponents. Fans also saw him help his teammates up, congratulate them on a good play, and celebrate with them… and when the team was down, he was there to encourage them to keep fighting.

Fans saw a player… a player who was willing to do everything in his power to give the fans a highlight reel, but also do his best to help the team they love and follow before and after his career, win. We don’t know the personal side of a player’s life, we hear when they make the news for a crime, but other than that, we didn’t know Meast personally. However, Redskins fans never turned on him for the troubles, they cheered louder and louder everytime he raised his arms before the snap, entered the field, made a big hit, intercepted a pass…

Fans watched Taylor grow on the field, a result of his personal life, avoiding possible trouble, focusing on the playbook and film… it all paid off. The trouble he got into forced him to mature and do right, and for teammates, they saw a “better friend” and fans saw a better player. Taylor’s final half-season in the NFL was on pace for being one of the better years we’d ever seen out of a defensive player on the Washington Redskins, and nobody can deny that his presence is missed. Taylor spent every game of his pro career as a Washington Redskin… he died a Washington Redskin… he’ll always be a Washington Redskin.

So three years later, we know what we had, what we’ll always miss, and what we will forever call one of ours. Sean, continue to Rest In Peace!

NFL Week 12 Predictions

Enigma's Picks:

New England at Detroit
New Orleans at Dallas
Cincinnati at NY Jets
Green Bay at Atlanta - I wanna say GB, but ATL have a way of pulling magic out from nowhere so I'm giving them the edge.
Pittsburgh at Buffalo
Carolina at Cleveland
Jacksonville at NY Giants - Tricky, the Giants are, well, the Giants, sooo..
Minnesota at Washington
Tennessee at Houston - Without Young the Titans should struggle.
Kansas City at Seattle
Miami at Oakland - Campbell's not playing, Dolph's are a solid side.
St. Louis at Denver - Denver this season aren't the side I'm used to, going to put faith in Bradford. I think he's done well so far and shows promise. I hope I don't regret this!
Philadelphia at Chicago - I think Vick is overrated and I'd quite like the Eagles to lose, it may be wishful thinking but I reckon Cutler could pull it off.
Tampa Bay at Baltimore
San Diego at Indianapolis
San Francisco at Arizona

Taken a few risks this week, I just hope they pay off! Sean did so well last week I'm worried he's gaining me!

NFL 2010-11 Midseason Review

After 9 weeks, every team has played at least 8 games, a couple of teams have played 9… I’ll be breaking down every team through the first 8 games (focusing mainly on the past 4 or 5).

AFC East:

New York Jets (6-2) – New York sputtered coming off of their bye week in an ugly 9-0 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and struggled to beat the Lions in Detroit in overtime; but they still remain atop their division. LT has been playing outstanding football, and Santonio Holmes is becoming a very good target for Mark Sanchez.

New England Patriots (6-2) – What an ugly loss we just saw to the Cleveland Browns… losing Randy Moss but adding Deion Branch back into the mix… Tom Brady is still playing like he wants to win this thing. Defensively, they’ve still got a lot of holes to fill.

Miami Dolphins (4-4) – The Dolphins are coming off of their first road loss… but they’ve been horrid at home. They’ve found a way to keep games close and alive, but there’s nothing about this team that stands out as a possible mark of a champion… they’re looking like they’ll remain a .500 team.

Buffalo Bills (0-8) – This is a team that is playing a lot better than their record looks. They’ve been in it up until the very end in almost every game, at times the defense blowing the lead. Ryan Fitzpatrick has been one of the hottest QB’s in the league over the past couple of weeks… I wouldn’t be surprised if they got a few BIG wins here in the second half of the season.

AFC North:

Baltimore Ravens (6-2) – Still one of the favorites on the season, Baltimore has been playing pretty solid football… and Ed Reed has returned as a monster (as expected) which is helping the front start to put more pressure on opposing QB’s. Still waiting for TJ to assert himself on offense, and Ray Rice to start coming around this year.

Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2) – They’re right in it with the best of ‘em… Mendenhall has gone crazy so far this year, and aside from Ben, may be the best weapon they’ve had in years… and Mike Wallace is finally starting to come around. Defensively, it’s the Steelers. They’re not AS dominant as years past, but they’re still a Dick LeBeau defense.

Cleveland Browns (3-5) – The Browns have had 2 huge wins over the Saints and Patriots… they’ve been playing outstanding defense the past couple weeks. Offensively they’re steamrolling people with Peyton Hillis running the ball and Colt McCoy is starting to establish himself. Still going to struggle, but they’re building in a good direction.

Cincinnati Bengals (2-6) – The Bengals are on a 5 game losing streak, and you wouldn’t know it from the receivers’ stats… but Carson Palmer is playing horrible football anyways. He’s making stupid decisions and not reading the play before the snap. Defensively, this isn’t a Mike Zimmer squad… they’re struggling to stop people left and right, and making little to no effort in tackling.

AFC South:

Indianapolis Colts (5-3) – They just lost to the Eagles… but Peyton Manning is Peyton Manning. No quarterback is better coming off of a loss than Manning. Defensively, they’re pretty banged up as well as on offense… but there’s more depth on the Colts’ depth chart than on any other team in the league.

Tennessee Titans (5-3) – This QB situation is never going to fix itself, especially with all of the injuries going on between Young and Collins. Chris Johnson isn’t on pace to repeat his 2,000 yards… but he’s still balling. The defense is starting to struggle a bit, committing stupid penalties. They just acquired Randy Moss off waivers… so the offense might start to open up a bit.

Jacksonville Jaguars (4-4) – The Jaguars have established themselves a bit here over the last ¼ of the season. Garrard has been playing solid football, and the defense is starting to really hit people. And they’ve still got Maurice Jones-Drew destroying defenses in every way he possibly can.

Houston Texans (4-4) – The Texans are really struggling. This is a team that started off terrific, and have just started to fall apart. Offensively, they still do some really good things, but they do some really stupid things as well. Defensively, they can’t stop breathing if they tried to hold their breath. Kubiak needs to do something quick, because his leash is going to shorten, fast.

AFC West:

Kansas City Chiefs (5-3) – The Chiefs have been playing tremendous football… up until the second half of the Raider game. Their defense is fast and punishing… and on offense, the run game really sets them up to be successful. They still need to polish a few things up, but they’re staking their claim to competitiveness in the AFC West.

Oakland Raiders (5-4) – Oakland has played brilliant football as well of late… they’re coming off of a couple huge wins. Jason Campbell has been playing pretty good football, and this receiving corps (the fastest in the league) is starting to catch and make plays. Darren McFadden has gone off in recent weeks. Defensively, they’re applying pressure left and right. 3-0 in the division.

San Diego Chargers (4-5) – They’ve been horrible in the division… Rivers is still playing at a Pro Bowl level, but his running game hasn’t been anything above average. Defensively, they’re finding ways to lose games, and keep losing. And this special teams unit has to be the worst in the NFL.

Denver Broncos (3-5) – The Broncos still don’t have an identity on either side of the ball. Their best weapon on offense is Brandon Lloyd (either a good thing or real bad considering Lloyd has never really been considered that kind of receiver)… defensively they don’t apply pressure.

NFC East:

New York Giants (6-2) – The Giants are ranked first in both overall offense and defense. Eli Manning has been playing exceptionally well, in huge part because Hakeem Nicks has become an elite WR. It also helps than Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs have started to run better. Their O-Line has been in flux this season, but they still find ways to win. Defensively, they’ve been stingy and punishing.

Philadelphia Eagles (5-3) – The Eagles are coming off of a win over the Colts, so they’ve got to feel confident moving on this season. Mike Vick is playing MVP-style football PASSING the ball… let alone mixing in some of HIS game at times… and the Eagles feel safe knowing Kolb can win them some games if Vick goes down again. Defense is getting very confident as well.

Washington Redskins (4-4) – This is a team that is very confused. They beat the Packers… but struggle to hold onto a lead vs. the Lions. There are still too many players on the roster who aren’t accustomed to putting teams away, and it hurts them. Offense is almost non-existent… but the defense is coming around to this 3-4 they’re playing.

Dallas Cowboys (1-7) – This has to be the worst team in football. They just got their head coach fired… they were expected by everyone to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl in their own home… and they still can’t figure it out. This is a running team, and they’re still passing like they’re the Colts…

NFC North:

Green Bay Packers (6-3) – Aaron Rodgers is starting to make those perfect precision passes and reading defenses… the ground game is actually moving a bit, and defensively, they’re destroying teams. When Clay Matthews is healthy, he’s as good a pass rusher as this league has… and he’s always coming up with the football. Definitely a team that can win in November, December, and even January.

Chicago Bears (5-3) – The Bears struggled against the Redskins, but managed to get a win over the Bills coming back from their bye week. They’re 2-0 in the division with a game coming up against the Vikings, and they're right behind Green Bay… they can’t afford to lose now. Defense is playing physical and the special teams unit is turning back on.

Minnesota Vikings (3-5) – This is a team that is struggling, and they’re starting to point fingers at head coach Brad Childress. One unnamed player was even quoted as saying “I don’t like Brad but I’ll keep playing for him”. They brought in Randy Moss hoping it would cure their Sidney Rice-less struggles, but that didn’t prove to benefit anything. This defense has not been the dominating force they’ve grown accustomed to being…

Detroit Lions (2-6) – They snuck in a win against the Redskins, Stafford has been reinjured though. This offense has found a way to remain competitive in every game, but the defense still doesn’t know how to win ball games.

NFC South:

Atlanta Falcons (6-2) – When Michael Turner is running hard, this team makes things happen. Roddy White is having another Pro Bowl year, and this defensive front 7 is really physical. Still some holes in the secondary, but they cover for their weaknesses by excelling with their strengths.

New Orleans Saints (6-3) – After a very disappointing loss to the Cleveland Browns, the Saints responded with one of the most incredible wins of the year against the Steelers. They hurt without Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush, but they still manage to move the ball. When those two return, the NFL better beware, because a repeat IS possible. Defensively they’re punishing with the return of Darren Sharper.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-3) – This is a surprise team, they’re not as good on paper as they’ve played. Sure, they haven’t really blown anyone out, but they make plays when it counts. Young WR Mike Williams (not to be confused with Seattle’s Mike Williams) has been arguably one of the most impressive players in the league, and ROTY could be his. This team actually has a chance.

Carolina Panthers (1-7) – This is a team that plays a little better than their record as well, but their struggles are well documented. They’re not run-blocking well, the passing game hasn’t had any receivers threatening downfield, and defensively they really do miss Julius Peppers.

NFC West:

Seattle Seahawks (4-4) – There are plenty of struggles, they’ve been blown out a few times, but they’ve managed to win some games with takeaways and an aggressive defensive line. Offensively, young WR Deon Butler competes with Tampa’s Mike Williams… this kid makes plays all over the field. Very good special teams unit as well.

St. Louis Rams (4-4) – Sam Bradford finds ways to keep his team in ballgames up to the very end. His receiving corps has been decimated, but he’s still finding targets and making plays. Defensively they’re playing hard and fast, but still show huge signs of weakness left and right.

Arizona Cardinals (3-5) – It’s crazy to imagine the Cardinals OFFENSE being the unit that struggles in Arizona. The QB play is erratic, whether it be Anderson or Hall… nobody is making it work. The run game can’t open up because of the lack of threat of a passing game. Defensively they’re one of the better units in the league… the secondary has been unleashing Hell on opposing offenses… and Kerry Rhodes proved to be a very valuable pickup.

San Francisco 49ers (2-6) – They’re playing a lot better now than they did the first 6 weeks, in huge part because of Frank Gore and Michael Crabtree. The defense is still trying to figure out who they want to be… they’re inconsistent from quarter to quarter with their intensity and aggressiveness. Could make a push though.

Insert Excerpt

I watched the bus drive off as you faded from my perceptive vision. I felt heartache I’d never felt in all of my life… I knew you weren’t gone for good, but I wondered if I would ever lay my eyes on you in person again. Photographs – they’re beautiful but they absolutely don’t do you justice. As tears rolled down my face and chilled in the April breeze on that gorgeous, sunny day… everything felt all the more surreal.

I waited, and waited for my cab – but all that ran through my mind was holding you in my arms, brushing your hair away from your teary eyes, kissing your upset, quivering lips. I heard your “bye” repeat in my head as clear as when you really said it. I got into that cab, not because I wanted to, but because I had to; yet not one day passes where I feel as though I made the right choice. Nothing, not even doing what was right and eventually proved to be the best decision, can justify my leaving you.

I felt hollow in that cab, not looking forward to anything… I knew I was going home to nothing, a nothing amplified by the fact that you wouldn’t be there with me. Little did I know the downward spiral of everything around me and how much I would have to deal with it myself, whether willing or unwillingly. Everything seemed to hurt more knowing it would be okay if I could hold you through it all, and couldn’t.

I pride myself on being good under pressure, I expect it of myself… but for the first time in my life I had no protection, no shield – and I can’t remember what my shield was before you. I was vulnerable, susceptible, and weak. I needed you… I still need you, but having you seems more and more distant with the knowledge that I’ve got to do more and more to just get to the point where I can start to make it happen. Once I do one thing, I’ve got to do two more things in order to get to the next step, and my list doesn’t cut down at all.

I’m looking for help… help that isn’t there, or refuses its services to me… I feel even more alone and hollow. Even you refuse to, or can’t, help me out with some of the mounting obstacles… stepping stones which became hurdles which grew into hills and mountains. Asking for help creates more problems, which I try to ask for more help with, in turn, creating more problems.

Even when I’ve broken away from the bulk of my problems, I still find myself overwhelmed by them. My life is now consumed by stress and this forest of quandary. I yearn for several months ago, holding you, knowing that nothing else in life matters because with you, I can get through anything. But to hold you and feel that feeling again, I’ve got to deal with this world of problems… and I’ve got to do it alone. It’s difficult trying to be a team with someone knowing everything else you have to do falls solely on you…

All I’m asking is for you to help me to get back to you, and understand that what I’m going through right now, has really taken its toll on me. But please remember and know that I’m going to keep my promise about getting back to you, no matter what! This is my journey… this is where my life begins now… Don’t Laugh, People… I will own this world soon enough!

(15/11) Daily Like And Dislike

I haven't actually done one of these in 3 weeks, so I guess this will be more of an overview of the last 3 weeks.

My likes for the past 3 weeks, actually I suppose, more the last week would be getting all my work in for university on time and being able to spend time with friends. It's been nice being on the phone, meeting up for lunches, going shopping, celebrating birthdays and chilling for no particular reason. I forgot how much fun it could be.

My likes for the 2 weeks prior would be getting work done and feeling productive. It's nice feeling like something you've done has paid off, like it's not been a wasted effort. I got a result today from a test I did last week, and I'm very happy with my results. 2 weeks ago I was sat there revising for it, because I didn't want to work on an assignment that was driving me crazy and needed to feel productive, thankfully it was!

3 weeks ago, it was a case of trying to get into a routine and organising everything after being ill, which I don't think I managed but it worked out in the end, so that's a like. As well as Grey's Anatomy, trying to catch up and it really got me through. In fact today I had a mini-practice test and was able to use some of the answers from the show to answer my questions.

Oh that's another like. Really good friends. With really good advice. One of my friends was lovely and gave me a heads up on how to prepare for a test I had at the end of a practical today. Without her wise words, potentially 20% of my grade could have escaped me!

The major dislike would be stress. The stress of trying to get all the work in and the stress of organising time. I think it's mainly why I didn't post one of these. Every day it would be a rant about how much work I still had to do. The assignment mentioned earlier nearly made me rip my hair out. Blood, sweat and tears went into that one. I managed to get it done and I was pleased with it, I hope I get a good grade for it! I was supposed to compare and contrast the eye and the ear. It took me 6 attempts to hit the nail on the head with the ear (2 days of writing basically deleted). However when I needed to compare and contrast it with the eye, I was easily able to spot comparisons, so I guess there's a plus side. Now I'm praying for a question worth many marks on the ear in the test I'll take in January!

Another dislike is break-ups. A lot of my friends who have been together for 3-5 years are starting to split, or have issues and I don't like it. I feel really bad for them and the distance between us doesn't make it easier, because I can't console them or look after them, which I'm so used to doing. I also don't like arguing with the people I love over a number of things. I don't like saying something which I know is hurtful - even if it is necessary.

I suppose that's it for the past few weeks. Hopefully I'll keep more on top of this in the future!

(15-11) Soundtrack To My Day

I quite like this song, but I really love the video. It's all about the romance, the chemistry and the fantasy. It's weird seeing Drake playing the doting boyfriend, but I love it. It's all really cute!

The soundtrack to my day is What's My Name? - Rihanna ft. Drake, enjoy!

Lest We Forget

November 11th, today is Remembrance Day or Veterans Day. It marks the end of World War I in 1918. Previously known as Armistice Day, it is now a day for remembering, not just those of the two World Wars but all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Every year, I stand in awe and gratitude of those who were brave enough to defend the land I walk on. Brave enough to fight for freedom and liberty. This year was no different. Along with many others, I will never be able to comprehend the choice these courageous men made between 1914-1918 and again in 1939-1945.

There are people in more recent years who have taken to the battlefields when freedom and liberty has been threatened since 1945. People who have fought and lost their lives. There are people who are still out there, fighting for a better world. I have a great amount of respect for those people and their loved ones. I cannot begin to imagine the amount of strength and courage they must have.

It is important to remember them. Those people who stood there, and who are still standing, in the face of great danger and put their lives on the line. It is important that we, the people who owe so much to these brave soldiers, take the time out of our days to pay our respects to them. We should not taint this day with arguments about the colour of the poppy people should wear. It is not about the colour. It is the understanding that those around you wearing a poppy, whether it be red or white, are all remembering and acknowledging the sacrifices those men and women made in the hopes for peace.

To all veterans, I say thank you. Thank you for your valour when fighting the forces of tyranny. Thank you for fighting to give me the freedom I enjoy today. But I also say sorry. I am sorry for everything you suffered. For everything your family suffered. I am sorry that everything you fought for and died for has been given up so easily. I am sorry that we did not guard the gifts you fought so hard to give us.

To those who wear the uniform and perform their duty all over the world today. I also thank and apologise to you.

Today, on the 11th day, of the 11th month at 11am, I took to my feet and bowed my head in 2 minutes silent gratitude. I recited the words from Ode of Remembrance. I hope you all took the time out of your busy lives to think about bold these people.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Lest we forget, lest we forget, lest we forget…

Lately I've been talking to my best friend about the past. Having relived the memories and hearing this song today it really reminded me of my mind state bout 3 years ago. I also love the title to this song, it's very fitting to my situation at the time. I'm not sure which version I prefer, I love the original because the attitude and the passion, but I love the cover because I think it's a bit more sweet and fitting to the lyrics.

This song has been playing through my mind all day, and I've listened to it about 5 times in a row. I used to love it when it first came out, and I guess I still do.

The soundtrack to my day is Underneath Your Clothes - Shakira, enjoy!

Louisiana Journey (Part IV)

My journey to Louisiana is finally over. I’m home in Maryland now, where I’ve longed to be since the day my grandmother died… I feel a relief. However, I am missing Louisiana a great deal… the comfort and freedom you experience down there far outdoes Maryland.

I still think about my grandparents often as well… being back here and away from Louisiana makes me miss them a little bit more, but it was nice to finally get whatever closure we could, and spreading their ashes brought an incredible relief that they both promised would come when it happened.

I think I also have greater opportunity to refocus my life on what I want to do and where I want/need to be. The time I spent with my grandparents, I learned how to focus on my dreams and goals, and shove my way through respectfully to grab ‘em and take sole possession of it all.

So I’m officially closing the Louisiana chapter in my life, and focusing on this next chapter, wherever it may begin to lead me.
